Drew Christy

I have never met Drew Christy. Drew was finishing his second year at Rose Hulman Institute of Technology and, on his drive home from winter exams, had a terrible accident on a patch of ice. He had severe brain injuries and for many days was clinging to life. Through testing, they found Drew had very little hope of recovering.

I found out about him through Rose – where I attended undergraduate school. It’s a small school – was all male when I was a student – and most of us were members of and living in fraternities. As it happens, Drew was living in the same room where I had slept thirty-eight years ago.

Drew’s family established a weblog through caringbridge.org to help friends and family follow his progress. His family is deeply religious and the posts always interpret their beliefs, feelings, and wishes in religious and scriptural language. The posts are always intelligent and faithful.

The weblog has helped me share the experience of Drew and his family. To most everyone’s amazement, Drew is slowly improving. He is now awake for significant periods of time, understands their instructions for his physical therapy, and is gaining weight. He cannot speak, or hold up his head, but each post describes a new person.

There are also setbacks and disappointments…and the family deals with them honestly and hopefully.

I tell you about Drew because I see, through his experience, the value of his family’s hopefulness, the sharing of experiences, and the constant care everyone generously gives.
